What is Spelling to Communicate (S2C)?
S2C is an alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) method designed for nonspeaking, minimally speaking, and unreliably speaking individuals. It supports people with sensory-motor differences in developing the purposeful motor skills needed to accurately point to letters on a letterboard.

Meet Your Practitioner
Mackenzie Schaffer is a certified Spelling to Communicate (S2C) practitioner based in coastal North Carolina. Her introduction to Spelling (letterboard and typing communication), came in 2023 when she stumbled upon the documentary, SPELLERS through a social media post. As a mother to Leo, a nonspeaker, the film sparked an immediate deep dive into this method of communication. Within months, the decision was made to pursue S2C for her daughter and, as many say, “once you see it, you can’t unsee it.”
What began as an exploration for her own family quickly grew into a profound calling ~ to help provide access to S2C for as many nonspeakers as possible.
Mackenzie has supported numerous families of nonspeakers and others through her former role as a support administrator. She also brings a background in holistic health facilitation and a natural drive to advocate for those who are being denied access to their human rights. Becoming part of the Spelling community and working to ensure nonspeakers have access to their human right of communication feels like a perfect and deeply aligned fit.
